SENDING NEW MUSIC
I am always happy to hear music that performers, record
labels or others like and think might fit well on Music You Can’t Hear On The
Radio. Nevertheless, many of the CDs I receive never make it onto my show
because I have only three hours a week in which to choose from all the new music
and the thousands of records and CDs from past months, years or decades that I
still love. What I do choose to play is of course impossible to quantify and
difficult to define. Although the show is centered around folk music and
bluegrass, I will include any other kind of music if I like the song or tune. I
gravitate toward bluegrass-traditional and progressive, old-timey, interesting
versions of older folk songs and blues, songs about unusual people or events,
and newer songs about history or politics particularly if they’re somewhat
subtle and not too heavy-handed, and I always like to hear songs about New
Jersey or from musicians who live or were raised in the Garden State. Also, I
like anything – sung or spoken – that is funny. Finally, I try to play music
from artists who will soon be performing in New Jersey, Bucks County or
Philadelphia. On the other hand, as a 57-year-old DJ, I am rarely moved by new
love songs from singer-songwriters much younger than I am, nor do I tend to play
songs about Texas or songs about the
life of musicians on the road.
To gain more of a sense of my taste, please
look at some of the Radio Playlists and Recommended Music sections
of this website. Also, please note that I am not a critic. If I don’t play a
particular album or artist, it could be because I don’t like it, but more likely
it just means I didn’t manage to fit it in. And take solace in the fact that
very little that I like ever achieves any significant commercial success.
